As a Japanese, I feel there is a significant difference between one aspect of American culture, individualism. We in Japan are trained to be a member of a group such as families, schools, and jobs and are almost always a part of an organization, so if a person makes a mistake individually, people judge it as a mistake that all members of the group have made. Besides this, a long time ago at home, we used to have a family system called patriarchy, in which the father has the controlling rights because we were all trained to depend on our father and follow him in whatever he said. This custom has made a big difference in our society. For instance, there have been resignations or suicides of supervisors because of subordinates¡Ç mistakes. Additionally, since we Japanese tend to judge parents for their children¡Çs behavior, we rely on each other or control others to avoid mistakes in both society and home. Because of our co-dependence on one another, we value thinking about others first instead of ourselves. It seems that our trying to help each other makes our connection between people stronger. However, people sometimes feel themselves too much as a part of a group and not as an individual person. I think this is one of the problems in Japan.
