資本という概念の起源は子を産む家畜にあるといわれています。
今日の資本という言葉は中世のcapitalis pars debiti(貸金の元本）から
きたと言われ、次第に資本の中に財貨が含まれるようになったと言います。
マルクスは「資本とは増殖を求める価値の運動体である」と定義してます。

英語の"capital"という単語は、もともと"head"という意味で使われていました。
フランス語の"chef",英語の"chief"に近いですかね。

現在の"capital"に財貨の概念が取り入れられたのは商売が始まってからのこと
なんでしょうかね。財貨の主要な部分となるのは元本ですから。そこに価値が
付いて膨らんでいく。その根源となるもの、それが"capital"。
有り体に言えば「元手」ということでしょう。

Postlethwayt's Universal Dictionary of Trade and Commerce in 1751 gives us this:

"CAPITAL, amongst merchants, bankers, and traders, signifies the sum of money which individuals bring to make up the common stock of a partnership when it is first formed. It is also said of the stock which a merchant at first puts into trade, for his account. It signifies likewise the fund of a trading company or corporation, in which sense the word stock is generally added to it. Thus, we say the capital stock of the bank, &c.
The word capital is opposed to that of profit or gain, though the profit often increases the capital, and becomes itself part of the capital, when joined with the former."

これを見るとすっかり今使われている資本（生産資本・営利資本）と同じです。
