2003年アカデミー賞のノミネート作品が発表されました。「Ｍ＆Ｃ」は作品、監督、美術、撮影、衣装デザイン、編集、メイクアップ、音響、音響効果、視覚効果、計10部門でノミネート、これは「LOTR：王の帰還」の11に次ぐ数です。ノミネート数は以下「コールドマウンテン」７、「シービスケット」７、「ミスティック・リバー」６、「パイレーツ・オブ・カリビアン」６となっています。
アカデミー賞の発表は ２月29日夜（日本時間３月１日）となります。

歴史ドラマのリアル感を出そうとしてこだわった美術、衣装、メイクアップ（水兵の手足や歯を見よ）、撮影(蝋燭光での撮影など）、音響などが評価されているのが、実際に映画を見た者としてはとても嬉しい。
観客に媚びるようなシナリオの改変をせず、１億５千万ドルをかけ、骨太で本物の地味な歴史ドラマを貫きとおしたことは、元手と興行収入でしか映画を評価しない米国の経済紙からは評価されずとも、やはり見ている人は見ていて評価してくれるのだなぁと。
もちろん、クロウとベタニーの熱演はあるのですが、この映画はスターだけで客を呼ぶ映画ではない。それを承知の上で細部を評価し、作品賞としてベスト５に残ったことを感謝したいと思います。
正直言って…コールドマウンテンとどちらが作品賞に残るか、かなりハラハラものだったので。

興行収入だけが映画の評価ではないし、若者にうけるだけが映画の価値ではない。
外国語映画賞に選ばれた日本映画が「たそがれ清兵衛」だというのは象徴的ですね。
一昨年にこの映画が日本で高い評価を得た中に「大人にも見られる映画である」という理由がありました。いつもはあまり映画館に足を運ばない年配者や中年男性の心をとらえた映画であると。
「マスター・アンド・コマンダー」の観客層を見ていると、「たそがれ清兵衛」のこの評価を思い出します。
アカデミー賞のこの評価を受けて、日本での広告宣伝がどう変わっていくのか？興味深く見守っていきたいと思っています。
