DOHA: Japan yesterday registered their third successive win in the
Toyota Cup Football Tournament by thrashing Germany 4-0. Yesterday’s
loss was Germany’s first in three matches.

Japan’s coach Yama Moto praised his defenders for registering what
he said was ‘a crucial win’.

Moto said: “I thought my defenders were mainly responsible for the
win because they did not allow any liberty to the German strikers.
The defenders rose to the occasion in what was a very important match for us.”

Japan, with their confidence sky-high after their earlier wins
against Thailand and Switzerland, yesterday opened the scoring
through mid-fielder Sugimoto Michiharu in the 11th minute.

Michiharu’s gamble of taking aim at the German goal from nearly 30
meters away paid rich dividends as the Japanese mid-fielder drove
hard and low to the left of goalkeeper Haas Daniel.

Five minutes earlier, Michiharu had attempted a similar shot, but his
left-footed drive had missed the goal narrowly.
Japan doubled their lead through Tokunaga Yuhi in the 43rd minute.
It was a spectacular effort from the Japanese striker. Stationed well
outside the box, Yuhi chested down a clearance by a German defender
and found the mark with blistering left-footer.

Japan showed no signs of relenting as striker Maeda Ryoichi produced
the third goal in the 72nd minute. Exhibiting superb dribbling
skill, Ryoichi took German defenders Wingerter Benjamin and Volz
Moritz in his stride before unleashing a powerful shot to the left of
goalkeeper Daniel who could only look back in disbelief.

Three minutes later, Japan went 4-0 up, thanks to a solo effort by
Yano Kisho, who covered a lot of ground before slamming the ball home
between the legs of goalkeeper Daniel.
