藤原さんは、最近の５世紀を振り返って、「欧米にしてやられた時代」（a period that was hijacked by the West）だという。そして最近は完全に欧米に支配されてしまった。どうして欧米がこれほど強力になったのか。その最大の原因は「産業革命」（industrial revolution）だという。
「とりわけ産業革命は、世界史上最大の事件と言えます。これによって、欧米が世界を支配するようになったのです。産業の力で作り出した強力な武器さえあれば、鉛筆より重いものを持ったことのないような非力な白人でも、槍１本でライオンを倒せるマサイの勇士を簡単に倒せます」
＜The industrial revolution in particular has every claim to be regarded as the most important event in world history. It was the industrial revolution that enabled the West to dominate the world. With the powerful weapons created by its manufacturing industry, even a feeble white man, who had never before picked up anything heavier than a pencil, could take down a Masai warrior who was strong enough to kill a lion with a single spear thrust.＞
「産業革命の家元イギリスが７つの海を武力によって支配し、その後をアメリカが受け継いだ結果、いま世界中の子供たちが泣きながら英語を勉強している。侵略者の言葉を学ばなければ生きていけないのですから」
＜Great Britain, the pioneer of the industrial revolution, controlled the seven seas through force of arms, and then was succeeded by the United State. As a result, children all over the world are forced, weeping and wailing, to study English. One cannot survive, after all, unless one learn the language of conqueror.＞
藤原さんは、もし日本が世界を征服していたら、「今ごろ世界中の子供たちが泣きながら日本語を勉強していたはずです。まことに残念です」という。もちろん、半分は冗談に違いないのだろうが、かって日本の植民地だった朝鮮半島や台湾の人たちが聞いたら、複雑な気持がするだろう。
藤原さんは、産業革命以前の西洋は取るたらない世界だったと書いている。「小さな土地を巡って王侯貴族間の抗争が続いており、無知と貧困と戦い（ignorance, poverty, war）に彩られていました。蛮族（savage tribes）の集まりであったわけです」と、なかなか手厳しい。続いて、日本文化の優秀性について、こう書いている。
「一方、日本は当時すでに、十分に洗練された文化を持っていました。文化的洗練度の指標たる文学を見ても、万葉集、古今集、枕草子、源氏物語、新古今集、方丈記、徒然草・・・と切がありません。この１０世紀における文学作品を比べてみると、全ヨーロッパが生んだ文学作品より日本一国が生んだ文学作品の方が質および量の両面で上、と私は思います」
＜By contrast, Japan of the same period already had a culture of considerable sophistication. If we focus on literature as one indicator of the degree of cultural refinement, then we come up with the “Manyoshu”, the “Kokinshu”, “the Makura no Soshi”, “the Tale of Genji”, “the Hojoki”, “the Tsurezuregusa”--- the list just goes on and on. A comparison of the works of literature produced over this ten-century-long period shows that Japan, Japan alone, is superior to the whole of Europe in terms of quantity and quality.＞
万葉集から芭蕉にいたる１０００年間の長きにわたる日本文学の隆盛は、世界の文学史の中でも特筆に値する。日本語を母胎とする日本文化のすばらしさを、私たち日本人がもっと知り、誇りに思うべきではないか。この点で、私は藤原さんに同感である。
