港町ファンの間で今話題なのが、トーレスの新しいインタビューです。思わずホロリときてしまう内容で、「彼のようなrole modelがうちんとこのエースだということを誇りに思う」という意見が上がっていましたが、トーレスはすでに港町の老若男女に愛されています。この読み応えは、質問もいいけど、彼の回答の質の高さゆえです。彼は顔もかわいいけれど脳みそもある、思慮深い若者です。前半部分を訳しました。
impassive: What did you learn from your first coach?
I:最初のコーチからは何を学びましたか？
Fernando Torres: I’ve had lots of coaches, from when I was five, but my first professional coach was Manolo Rangel at Atle'tico when I started there at about ten years old. He was the first one who told me I was going to play in the top flight, but he also used to remind me I should always aim to enjoy myself. He used to let us choose the training exercises, one player each day.
He’d ask one of the kids: “What do you want us to do today?” Over the years you forget the details, but the thing he taught me that has stayed with me is the importance of enjoying yourself, as if it wasn’t a job.
I learned from him that you have to apply yourself every day in training, but above all, that this is a game to be enjoyed.
FT：５歳の時から、ぼくはたくさんのコーチと出会ってきたけれど、10年前にアトレティコでプレーし始めた時、そこにいたマノーロ・ランゲルが最初のプロフェッショナル・コーチだった。彼は、ぼくがいずれトップクラスでプレーするだろうと最初に言った人だったけど、彼は同時に、常にプレーを楽しむことを目標にすべきだということを、ぼくに言い聞かせてくれもした。彼は一日一人ずつにエクササイズの内容を選ばせてくれたものだよ。子どもたちの一人に聞くんだ：「今日はみんなに何をさせたい？」。何年も経つと詳しいことは忘れてしまうけれど、彼がぼくに教えてくれたことは「まるで仕事ではないかのように、自分自身が楽しむことの大切さを忘れるな」ということだった。ぼくは彼から、毎日トレーニングに打ち込まなければならないということを、でもそれにも増して、これは楽しむためのゲームなんだということを教わった。
Guillem: And the man in the street?
G：そして見知らぬ男性には？
Torres: I remember something from the day I left to join Liverpool. It was at Madrid airport, and there were loads of people and cameras everywhere. It was a very emotional time, and my parents were upset to see me leaving. There was this old guy there, nobody knew who he was, but he was quite indignant and he came up to me really upset and said: “It’s a shame that you have to leave Atle'tico, but I can see that you need to leave to realise your full potential and to be all that you can be; to show the world what we all already know: how good you really are.”
When you play for a football team, it’s times like that you realise many people love you more and care more about you as a person than a footballer. I took those words to heart. Of course, people had said similar things to me before, but this was different.
This was a 60-year-old guy I’d never met before, who’d been an Atle'tico fan all his life, who loved his team - but at that moment he was more concerned about my well-being than anything else. What makes it even more special is that I realise those are
the things football is losing little by little. But I will carry those words with me for a long while. That really moved me.
FT：リヴァプールに入団するために出発した日の出来事は覚えている。あれはマドリッドの空港で、あちこちにファンやカメラマンが大勢いたよ。とても感情を揺さぶられるひと時で、両親はぼくの旅立ちを前に動揺していた。その場に、その年配の男性がいたんだ。誰も彼が何者か知らなかったけれど、その人はかなり憤然としていて、ぼくのところへとても取り乱した様子でやってくると言った。「君がアトレティコを去らなくてはならないのは残念だ。でも君が、君の中に眠る才能を発揮し、君がなり得る限りの存在になるために、世界に、我々がもうすでに知っていること、君が真にどれほど素晴らしいかを知らしめるために、ここを去る必要があることは私にもわかっているんだ」
フットボールチームでプレーする時、それは、自分が選手として以上に人として、大勢の人々にどれほど愛され気にかけてもらっているかということを実感する時でもある。ぼくはこの言葉を胸にしまった。もちろん、皆以前から同じようなことを言ってくれたけど、これは別物だった。
彼はぼくが一度も会ったことのない、人生をアトレティコに捧げた60代の男性で、自分のチームを愛していた。けれどこの瞬間は、彼は他の何にも増してぼくの幸福を気にかけてくれていた。こうした事こそ、フットボールが少しずつ失いつつある物事であるとぼくが気がついたことが、この思い出をより特別なものにしている。でもぼくは、彼のこの言葉をこれからもずっと一緒に連れていこうと思っている。本当に心を動かされたから。
Guillem: What has your father taught you?
G：父親からは何を学びましたか？
Torres: A lot. A person is a reflection of his parents. I’ve never been one for trying to stand out, and I’m embarrassed being the centre of attention, but whenever I am in the foreground, I know my father is always there in the background watching over me. I remember playing a match for Atle'tico when I was eleven or 12 years old in the village of Legane's, and the coach decided to substitute me. There was a guy watching the game, hurling abuse at me, calling me all kinds of names. I put my head up and looked at him, and my father was there, right next to him, but he didn’t say a word; he was completely impassive. He didn’t even look at this guy, let alone say anything to him or start a fight like some parents might. He was just there.
I will never forget that. He was watching everything that goes on and accepting that is the way things are. And that’s how he always is: there, supporting me regardless of what’s going on around him and always with a very gentleman-like attitude.
People might be surprised with my dad’s reaction, but it is a reflection of his personality, the way he has always been, in the background, accepting things as they come.
I learned from him at that moment, this is something I would have to put up with for the rest of my career: Insults, criticism from people that don’t know me. I have had it from packed stadiums, but I know my dad has been in the stands watching me. So, I have learned to prefer to stay in the background, to let people around me take the spotlight, something I’ve never been comfortable with. I’ve never forgotten, thanks to my dad, the importance of the ‘other person’.
Of course there have been occasions where I haven’t been able to avoid the plaudits, or to be in the headlines, but I have always preferred the people closest to me to get the attention.
FT：多くを。人とはその人の両親のreflection（映った影）だ。ぼくは一度として人より目立とうと試みたことはないし、注目の的になることには当惑してしまうんだ。でもぼくが最前面にいる時はいつも、父が背後からぼくを見てくれていることは知っていた。11歳か12歳の時、village of Leganeでアトレティコのためにプレーしたことを覚えている。コーチはぼくをベンチに入れることにした。観戦していたある男が、ぼくに罵りの言葉を浴びせ、ぼくをあらゆる名前で呼んだ。顔を上げて男を見ると、そこに父が、男のすぐ隣におり、だけど父は一言も口を開かなかった――父は微動だにしなかった。他の親たちなら始めかねない口論や喧嘩は言うまでもなく、その男を一瞥することさえしなかった。ただそこにいた。
ぼくは決して忘れない。父は起こっている事すべてを見守り、成り行きのままに物事を受け入れた。それがいつもの父のやり方だった――ただそこで、周囲で何が起ころうとも、紳士的な態度でぼくをサポートし続けた。人々は父の反応に驚くかもしれないけれど、それは父が常にしてきたこと、目立たぬ場所で、発生した出来事を受け入れる父の人柄を反映している。
あの時ぼくは父から学んだ。これはぼくが、今後のキャリアのために我慢しなければならない類のこと――ぼくを知りもしない人々からの侮辱、批判――なんだ、と。満員のスタジアムからそれを受けたことはあるけれど、ぼくは父がずっとスタジアムで見守り続けてくれていることを知っている。そんなわけで、ぼくは舞台裏に留まって、身近な他の人に、ぼく自身はどうして慣れないスポットライトを浴びさせる方を好むようになったんだ。決して忘れないよ。�狢梢有瓩梁減澆箸い�重要性。ありがとう、父さん。
もちろん、賞賛されたり新聞の見出しになることを避けられないような出来事はあったけれど、ぼくはいつも身近な人が注目を集める方が好きなんだよ。
Guillem: And your mother?
G：母親は？
Torres: I learned all about self-sacrifice from her.
She gave up a lot to see me fulfil my ambitions. She didn’t go to work because she was too busy taking me to and from training: every day, from where we lived in Fuenlabrada into Madrid, which meant getting a train, then a bus, then walking through a park. She did it at eight in the morning and again at six in the evening, just to make her son happy. I sometimes think about many old teammates of mine that didn’t make it, and they had mothers who did the same for them.
Both my mum and dad gave much more importance to looking after their son than to themselves. It’s a gift they gave me - I am much happier when I see people around me happy than when I am happy myself.
Everything I am now is a tribute to my mother’s hard work and all that she gave up for me.
FT：母からは自己犠牲のすべてを学んだ。
母は夢を叶えようとするぼくを見守るために多くのことを諦めた。ぼくたちが住んでいたFuenlabradaからマドリッドまで、トレーニングの送り迎えのために、それは電車に乗り、バスに乗り、練習場まで歩いていくことだけど、忙しくて母は働きに行けなかった。母は息子を喜ばせたい一心で、朝の八時に送っていき、夕方の六時に迎えにきた。時々、プロにはなれなかった昔のチームメイトたちのことを考えるよ。彼らの母親は皆、自分の息子に同じことをしていたんだ。
母も父も、自分たちのことよりも、息子の面倒を見ることにより重きをを置いていた。これは両親がくれた贈り物だ――ぼくは自分が幸せでいる時よりも、周りの人たちが幸せでいるのを見ている時の方がもっと幸せだよ。
今、ここにいるぼくという存在のすべてが、母の献身と、母がぼくのために諦めたすべてに対する賛辞（tribute）なんだ。
現在バカンスでマイアミのようですが、恋人のオラジャ（リャとの中間）と一緒の写真が出てきました。
このカップルにはいつまでも末永く幸せであって欲しい（熱弁）！！
トーレスのことを知れば知るほど、大好きになるこの男女ペア。アトレティコ時代から苦楽を共にしてきた幼馴染だそうで、特に落ち込んで感情的になっているような時は、彼女が落ち着かせてくれるんだそうです。彼女にはナチュラルな美しさがあるし、こうして彼女の写真を一生懸命撮っているトーレス(笑）を見ると、彼がdown to earthな若者だというのが伝わってきます。
でもちょっと油断して食べ過ぎたみたい。シーズン開幕までにはシェイプアップしてね。
オラジャちゃんナチュラルな感じで本当にかわいい。トーレスが小柄な女の子を大切にしているのもまたかわいい。応援！

遠い昔に忠告は済ませていた。美しいものはもっとも残酷になり得る、と。
彼は冷静な分析家でありながら、美を尊重する男だった。私たちはどちらも、美と学問を愛し、それゆえに固く結びついた。美しさに惑わされて判断を誤まるには彼は論理的過ぎたが、どこかで自らの信念の敗北を望んでいる節があった。つまり、いつか抗いようのない美が味気ない論理を打ち負かすことを。
私は慎重に言葉を選びながらも、率直な感想を伝えた。
私たちは皆、あのような結末を予期していたと思う。選手は敗北の痛みを受け止める覚悟でピッチに立っていた。そして、振り下ろされた暴力的な一撃の前に、なすすべもなく崩れ落ちたのだ、と。
「だけど、ユルゲン、君も思ったんじゃないか」
彼はそこではじめて立ち止まった。顔を上げ、たった今新しい発見をしたような眼で、振り向いた私を見つめた。
「あの日、私たちを打ち負かしたものは、暴力と呼ぶにはあまりにも美しかった」
あたかもその残酷さに魅せられてしまったように、彼はささやいた。
