The United States is the only nation to have qualified for every U-17/U-16 World Cup since FIFA began the event in 1985, and will be looking to extend that streak with a 13th consecutive appearance in 2009. It won the inaugural CONCACAF title in 1983 and won a second crown nine years later in Cuba.It has finished as high as fourth at the World Cup (1999) and fifth three other times.

Cuba comes to the CONCACAF championship as the Caribbean champion, having won five its six games and drawing the other by a combined score of 29-3. The Leones del Caribe won the CONCACAF U-16 crown in 1988 and became the first Caribbean nation to qualify to the World Cup in 1989 in Scotland. Cuba also competed in a second World Cup, in Italy in 1991.

El Tri has won a record four CONCACAF titles and is the only team from the region to win the U-17 World Cup (Peru, 2005). It starts the 2009 championship with a 10-match unbeaten streak in the tournament, and has qualified eight times for the World Cup (second most in CONCACAF). Mexico is acting as host of the CONCACAF finals for a third time.

The Maple Leafs arrive at the CONCACAF championship with a new coach after the six-year reign of Stephen Hart. Sean Fleming is seeking to return Canada to the World Cup for the fifth time and first since 1995. Canada was the first CONCACAF nation to host a FIFA U-16 World Cup in 1987.

The Chapines captured the third and last Central American berth in the CONCACF championship by defeating Panama in a two-game playoff. It earned the playoff by finishing second in Group B, edging El Salvador with a 15-3 goal difference due largely to a 13-0 victory over Nicaragua.

The Soca Warriors make a Caribbean record 12th appearance in the CONCACAF finals in 2009, qualifying by finishing runner-up in the Caribbean championship to Cuba. After edging Bermuda on goal difference to win its first-round group, it needed two extra time goals to get past Jamaica 3-1 in the Caribbean semifinals and qualify. Trinidad has played in the World Cup twice before, including when it was the only Caribbean nation to host in 2001.

The Ticos have qualified for the U-17 World Cup seven times, the most by a Central American nation. It won Group B of the Central American (UNCAF) qualifying tournament, allowing only one goal combined in victories over Guatemala, Nicaragua and the host El Salvador. Costa Rica was the first Central American team to compete at the FIFA U-16 World Cup in China 1985.

Honduras extends its streak of being the only nation to compete in each of CONCACAF’s U-17/U-16 finals, qualifying for a 14th time. It won Group A of the
Central American (UNCAF) qualifying, defeating Belize and host Panama without surrendering a goal. Despite its consistency in qualifying for the CONCACAF finals, it has reached the World cup only once (Korea Republic, 2007).
