Jamaica won seven of eight games and drew another, outscoring its opponents 23-3, in claiming the Caribbean U-20 title and earning the area’s lone guaranteed berth in the CONCACAF finals. It prevailed over St. Vincent, Haiti and the Dominican Republic in January to win the four-team Caribbean finals. Jamaica became only the second Caribbean nation to qualify for a FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2001.

Mexico arrives at the CONCACAF U-20 less than a month after Juan Carlos Chavez replaced as coach Jesus Ramirez, who resigned to take over as manager of Mexico City club America. El Tri won 10 CONCACAF U-20 titles between 1962 and 1992, and has qualified for the FIFA U-20 World Cup 10 times, (second most in CONCACAF). Mexico finished runner-up at the 1997 U-20 World Cup in Tunisia was the first CONCACAF nation to host the FIFA event in 1983.

Costa Rica is making its 16th appearance in the CONCACAF finals, and has qualified six times for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, the most by any Central American nation.

Despite an opening loss to Guatemala, los Cuscatlecos recovered to beat Panama and Belize, winning Central American qualifying Group 2 and earning its berth in the eight-team CONCACAF championship. This will be the 17th appearance in the CONCACAF finals for El Salvador, which in 1964 became the first to win the regional title, but has yet to qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
