今号は、海外の文法参考書のなかから次の一冊をご紹介します。

・John Eastwood, *Oxford Learner's Pocket Grammar: Pocket-sized Grammar to
Revise and Check Grammar Rules* (Oxford University Press, 2008)

本書は、次のような構造の文について、実に端的な説明と明快な対比例を与えています。(p.143)

It was kind of you to help me.
It was rude of your friend not to shake hands with anyone.

We use of + noun phrase + to-infinitive after adjectives that say what
people are like or how they behave.

The adjectives include: brave, careless, clever, foolish, generous, good,
kind, mean, nice, rude, selfish, silly, stupid, typical, unfair,
unreasonable, unwise, wrong.

Some of these adjectives can take the pattern with for. Compare these
sentences.

It was nice of Tom to walk the dog. (It was a kind action by Tom.)
It was nice for Tom to walk the dog. (It was a pleasant experience for Tom.)

ここで、of と for を用いたそれぞれの場合のちがいを短いパラフレーズによって浮き彫りにする手際のよさにうならされます。

さらに、私たちが次のように文を１つ付け足す工夫を施すことで、
1aがトムの性格、行動が他人にとってありがたかったと述べる一方、1bは犬の散歩という経験、時間がトム自身にとってプラスだったというちがいをより鮮明にすることができるのではないでしょうか。

1a. It was nice of Tom to walk the dog. He knew I was feeling unwell and
offered to help.
1b. It was nice for Tom to walk the dog. He had been stuck at his desk all
day and desperately needed some fresh air.
