Point of view |
Your student is very talented. His pronunciation and pacing are very good.
His manner of speaking, where he has rising intonation at the end of every sentence, is quite common in public speaking and I suspect is common in American speech as well.
In Australia we tend to hold a neutral intonation unless we are asking a question or trying to emphasize something.
I'm not sure whether that is only Australian or whether it will be abnormal for other cultures.
His gestures were excellent and his body language was very engaging. The one gesture that I recommend he reconsider is when he is counting on his fingers.
In Japan you start counting with your thumb, but in Australia we start counting with the index finger, then the middle finger, then the ring finger. The thumb is always last. This is a very small detail and may not matter but I figure if your student is going for a national award, it may make a difference.
